One-Subject Master of Social Science - Study Programs

The Faculty of Social Science at the Ruhr-University Bochum pursues a modern interdisciplinary approach to social science. The central feature of the faculty is the combination of social science disciplines from the fields of political science, sociology, social psychology and social anthropology, social policy and social economics as well as social science methods and statistics. Specialization in a cross-cutting area is achieved through the (mandatory) choice of a program of study. The following six programs of specialization are available for selection.


Management and Regulation of Labor, Economy and Organization

The master's program of specialization Management and Regulation of Labor, Economy and Organization fosters scientific knowledge and professional qualifications in the fields of labor, economy and organization. This includes national and international organizations, corporate development, human resources and labor, economic locations and service sectors, participation and labor regulation as well as newer tools such as corporate social responsibility and compliance regulations. Particular emphasis is placed on an international comparative perspective.

Double Degrees at the Faculty

Students in this master's program can obtain a double degree (two degrees) with the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) in Mexico under certan conditions.

Changes to the Examination Regulations - Double Degree

Globalization, Transnationalization and Governance

The thematic focus of the master's program of specialization Globalisation, Transnationalisation and Governance lies on cross-border processes and developments of economic, social and state institutions and actors. The modular conception of the study program enables an integration of the different levels of impact of globalization, transnationalization and governance. The program is interdisciplinary and draws primarily on political science and sociology.

Double Degrees at the Faculty

Students in this master's program can also obtain a double degree if they study at least one semester at the University of Wrocław (Breslau) in Poland.

Health Care Systems and Health Management 

The master's program of specialization Health Care Systems and Health Management is interdisciplinary. It deepens social scientific expertise in social economics, political science as well as sociology and combines them with institutional knowledge of health policy and organizational structures in the health care system. In addition to theoretical foundations of health policy and economics, the program focuses on the institutions and actors of the health care system.

Social Research Methods

The master's program of specialization Social Research Methods combines studies of social science with a comprehensive training in methods. It provides the opportunity to deepen subject knowledge within the faculty's broad thematic offering while acquiring in-depth knowledge of the methods of empirical social research.

Culture and the Individual

The master's program of specialization Culture and the Individual draws attention to complex relationships between individuals, groups, and their cultural and material environments. By combining psychological, sociological, and ethnological perspectives, the program is unique in Germany.
